The Importance of Domain Name Research for SEO

Importance of Domain Name Research for SEO
This is one of the most overlooked detail in search engine optimization. The general idea behind the majority of people optimizing their website goes something like this … “I registered a domain name I want for my business, now I need to optimize it to have proper ranking for my business keywords…” WRONG !!!
Having a proper seo campaign starts from the very beginning of the website’s life, that is, before the domain is even registered. The majority of people want to optimize their existing website. Now if the website is only couple months old, you might have to look at other strategies for optimizing it.
A Bit of Domain Name History:
The search engines came not too long after the internet was born, so to speak. At that time, since everything was pretty much “new”, the domain name market had a lot of available names to be registered that nowadays can cost you quite a bit of money to get your hands on.
Back then, the weight for domain names regarding optimization was based on the keywords it contained and the TLD. The domain age had no effect on SEO since everything was new anyways. You simply registered a keyword-rich domain name (which most probably was available) and went on with your optimization. Nowadays, things are different, very different. One of the KEY ASPECTS to your search engine optimization today will be your domain name, and finding a good one can be a serious challenge.
You are now facing two issues: Keyword-Rich Domain and Domain Age. Oh, almost forgot, you need BOTH those ingredients in your domain if you want to succeed with SEO.
Keyword-Rich Domain: It is important for your domain name to contain the keywords of what you do, if you sell “toner” the find a domain name with that keyword (preferably closer to the beginning)
Domain Age: There are many speculations out there regarding domain age, some agree, some disagree. From my personal experience, I can definitely say that domain age DOES affect search engine optimization. Of course, it will all depend on the keywords you are trying to rank for and what the seo competition looks like. For example, if you have two identical websites, with identical seo components but one is 2 years older, it will probably rank higher.
This is why the importance of making a proper domain name research is extremely important if you plan on optimizing it for search engines.
Fortunately, I will share with you great domain name research techniques in my upcoming posts. This should help you find the perfect domain for both your business and seo campaign.
